To be able to exercise the privileges of your EASA pilot license, its associated Ratings need to be valid and you need to have a valid EASA medical certificate. Maintaining the validity of your Ratings can be a challenging and difficult process which often includes finding a qualified EASA Flight Examiner and/or Flight Instructor, obtaining access to an aircraft, flying a Proficiency Check, and dealing with the EASA National Aviation Authorities. If you are living in the United States this process can be extremely difficult to organize and manage and often requires travel to an EASA country.
